“Mas Maten” (Morning Mas) which was launched on Saturday before Shrove Tuesday in 1997 by the group “Point d’interrogation” has become an event in the Guadeloupe carnival calendar not to be missed under any circumstances. Never before have so many people participated in this great parade between the city of Les Abymes and the city of Pointe-à-Pitre via Frébault street. According to the organizers, last year the participants were already 3,000 but this year they were 4,000, a record. “In the beginning, it was just a few people who gathered to parade on Saturday morning and then this event was organized for all”, they said. The result is there for everyone to see, today. If the participants were present, spectators including many tourists were massed along the streets and especially in downtown Pointe-à-Pitre to watch these carnival lovers of middday, coated with black “gwo siwo” and roucou oil, who danced to the rhythm of the drums, conches and chacha. Dozens of young with whips opened this massive parade. It should be noted that the group with skin “Point d’Interrogation”, created in 1990, received for this 21st edition of “Mas Maten” a delegation from Antigua and Barbuda which will organize their carnival from July 27th to August 7th .
