Queen of Sheba: a show to celebrate the black woman

Ten candidates who work in various professions (educator, financial officer, teacher etc.) were selected for the coronation.

This Saturday, February 24 at 08:00 pm was held at the Centre Culturel Sonis (Guadeloupe) the election for “The Queen of Sheba”, an election that the organizers describe as non-commercial contrary to the traditional women’s beauty contests.

Guadeloupe, land of biological and cultural intermingling, highlights the African continent’s heritage through “Le Mois de l’Afrique” (Africa Month) every two years at the initiative of the association “Racines” (Roots). This 12th edition, whose theme is “Today’s Africa”, takes place from February 2 to March 3 under the patronage of Aminata Traoré (former Minister of Culture of Mali).

Several events (you have to pay for almost all) are contained in the program, including nearly twenty conferences on various topics (Pan-Africanism, women of Africa and its diaspora, the independence of African states, the colonial heritage and the effects of neo-colonialism, African yoga etc.), workshops and cultural shows.

This Saturday, February 24 at 08:00 pm was held at the Centre Culturel Sonis the election for “The Queen of Sheba”, an election that the organizers describe as non-commercial unlike the traditional women’s beauty contests. Ten candidates who work in various professions (educator, financial officer, teacher etc.) were selected for the coronation. All had to show on the stage of the hall “Le Bwa Fouyé” – which represented for the occasion an African village with its chief and its warriors – their passions (poetry, gwoka dance, singing, music, hairstyling of natural hair, local medicinal plants, nature…). But, for that purpose, they also had to have acting talents. The audience, consisted mainly of women, enjoyed this show unlike any other where all the participants were, in fact, “Queens of Sheba”.
