Every year, from October 1 to 31, is organized “Pink October”, a campaign to raise awareness about breast cancer among women and men and to collect funds for research. If this international event started in 1985 in the United States, it was launched in 1994 in France.
We know the walks and races organized in several cities in France and in the French overseas territories but also in several countries around the world with a color highlighted: pink.
Last Sunday, October 9, in Guadeloupe, hundreds of women wearing pink t-shirts participated in the 5-kilometer race called “Les foulées du Ruban rose” in Jarry, Baie-Mahault.
For over thirty years, artists have been inspired by Pink October to create in particular frescoes and graffiti. In Paris, Brazil or in the United States, famous monuments (Eiffel Tower, Christ the Redeemer and Empire State Building) are illuminated in pink to mark the event.
This year, in Guadeloupe, the town of Trois-Rivières is actively participating in this campaign to raise awareness about breast cancer and the municipality commissioned artist Jérôme Sainte-Luce to paint a large fresco that was hung on the facade of the city hall. “I wanted to raise awareness of breast cancer through a graphic design specific to the Amerindian heritage that is very present in Trois-Rivières”, said the artist.
