The National Assembly dedicated a day to Martinican director. On the program: medal presentation and screening of the film “Rue Cases-Nègres”.
It’s never too late to do the right thing. This is the observation that can be made after the award of the medal of the National Assembly to Euzhan Palcy, this Wednesday, May 3 at noon. The deputies as well as many personalities of the French Overseas were present for this tribute to Martinican director who became known with the unforgettable “Rue Cases-Nègres” (1983) and who was the only woman to have directed Marlon Brando, the Hollywood superstar, in “A Dry White Season” (1989).
Moreover, two of her numerous awards were displayed on a table in the lounges of the Hôtel de Lassay where was held the event, presided over by Yaël Braun-Pivet (president of the French National Assembly), namely the Silver Lion for the best first film received at the Venice Film Festival in 1983 and the Oscar received for her entire body of work, at the 13th edition of the Governors Awards in Los Angeles in November 2022.
Euzhan Palcy, who was also made an officer of the National Order of Merit in 2009 and an officer of the Legion of Honor nine years later, was very moved by this national tribute initiated by the deputy of the first district of Martinique, Jiovanny William.
In addition to this ceremony, to close this day dedicated to Caribbean director who has already shot about twenty films during her career, “Rue Cases-Nègres” (César for best first film in 1983) was screened at 7:00 pm at the National Assembly at 33, quai d’Orsay in Paris.
Euzhan Palcy’s last film dates from 2010, so let’s hope that this new recognition will allow her to raise the necessary funds to continue to offer other feature films to the public and to train young people…
