The mayor of Santo Domingo East (SDE), Manuel Jiménez, received in his office the general director of the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National Library (BNPHU), Rafael Peralta Romero, in order to join efforts to recover and restore the splendour of the Juan Sánchez Lamouth library in Villa Duarte.
M. Jiménez said that both institutions will sign an inter-institutional agreement so that the library fulfils its function and becomes a high-quality cultural and scientific centre for the municipality.
“The library is currently functioning, but it is deteriorating gradually, since it is no longer supported. Rafael and I believe that the time has come to recover such an important asset for the youth and the cultural movement of the municipality”, said the mayor.
Peralta Romero thanked Mayor Jiménez for his interest in the operation of the library, and assured that through the agreement between the institution he heads and the municipality, they will be able to get improvements. “The Municipal Council has already begun to recover the square around the library, which is a beautiful part of the Villa Duarte sector, so the mayor’s willingness to recover that square and promote it for real use is very salutary, since it is located in an important point of the city”, said the director of the BNPHU.
Rafael Peralta Romero is a full member of the Dominican Academy of Language, a columnist for the newspaper El Nacional and for 27 years was a professor at the Faculty of Humanities of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD).
The government official, during his visit to the mayor, was accompanied by Dr. Dennis Peña, head of the Directorate of Public Libraries at the BNPHU and Dionisio Peña, head of the Juan Sánchez Lamouth Municipal Library.
The Juan Sánchez Lamouth Municipal Library, a branch of the Public Library Network of the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National Library, was founded on October 26, 1999.
